This was the name given, from his birthplace, to the Italian painter Giovan Battista Salvi (Sassoferrato 1609 - Rome 1685). In Rome, where he came in very young age to study Rafaello and the Carracci brothers, he was Domenichino's pupil and also looked up to Reni. He was the author of a profuse production of altarpieces, almost always Madonne, quite appreciated in its times on grounds of their devote tonal characteristics, but by now judged as somewhat affected and academic because of their programmatic simplicity. His best-known work is the Madonna del Rosario , Rome, S. Sabina .
