Italian painter (Florence 1439 – same place 1507). Neri di Bicci's pupil, he was influenced by A. Baldovinetti, Domenico Veneziano and Pollaiolo, as is first dated work shows ( Madonna, S. Anna e Santi , Berlin; 1474). Already in this painting, as well as in the one that follows with the Annunciazione e Santi ( Louvre), Rosselli 's artistic boundaries can be noticed; lack of expression in the characters, inability to grasp the perspective synthesis of space, reduction of the chromatic elements to simple decorative effects. In spite of these flaws, he obtained the assignment to perform three square paintings in the Sistine Chapel: Ultima cena; Predica sul monte; Adorazione del vitello d'oro (iter 9) , for which he sought Pietro di Cosimo's aid. Better than the Sistine's frescoes - that were liked by the Pope which had commissioned them on grounds of their outer preciousness but that also earned the painter the uncovered criticism of his fellow workers - is the Processione del Sacramento (Procession of the Sacrament - Florence; S. Ambrogio), where there's no lack of portraits sharply observed from real life. He also worked on Florence's Annunziata and left numerous other paintings. Among his pupils he had Fra' Bartolomeo and Piero di Cosimo, which surpassed by great lengths the mediocre eclecticism of their teacher. |
