Italian architect and sculptor (Rome 1551 - 1599). Typical exponent of the classicizing taste diffused in Rome during the Counterreformation, he raised the monument to Gregorio XI in S. Francesca Romana , Gregorio XIII's statue in S. Maria in Aracoeli (iter 1) and the splendid altar of the Sacrament in S. Giovanni in Laterano (iter 4). As an architect, he commenced in pompous shapes the church of S. Andrea della Valle (iter 5) , then continued by Grimaldi and by Maderno who completed the tribune, the choir and the cupola.
